SANTAMASAK OR FEAST OF SANTO TOMAS

This festival is celebrated on 22 December. During the day, agricultural produce is displayed and sold and there are various contests (of cheese, fruit, and vegetables), craft exhibitions, rural sports and parades.

FEAST OF SAN JUAN

The feast of the patron saint takes place from 23 to 26 June.

The highpoint is the dance, known as “Errementeri dantza”, which takes place on the eve of the day of San Juan, 23 June. The dancers perform through the streets of the town and finish with the “zortziko” of San Juan, danced around the bonfire in the Town Hall square.  Many groups from surrounding areas take part in this event, dance troupes, musical bands, groups of txistularis (Basque pipes), pipers from Arrasate, trikitilaris (Basque diatonic accordion), albokalaris (Basque wind instrument) and txalapartaris (Basque percussion instrument).

FEAST OF MARITXU KAJOI

Since 1977, the feast of Maritxu Kajoi has been celebrated on the first Friday in October. The image of Maritxu Kajoi, the Virgin of the Rosary and patron of the “chiquiteros” (traditional Basque musicians), is placed in a niche outside the parish church of San Juan, next to Erdiko Kkale. On this day it is customary to go out elegantly dressed.

FEAST OF SAN NICOLAS

The feast of San Nicolas is celebrated on 6 December.   During the morning, local boys and girls sing a song to San Nicolas along the streets of the district, and when finished, chestnuts, nuts, sweets, coins… are thrown from balconies of private houses and from the main balcony of the council building, a tradition known as the “bolo-bolo”.
