Visitors to Elgeta can appreciate the uniformity and simplicity of the medieval areas of Debagoiena.

Although there had been an earlier nucleus, the Mediaeval village was founded on the plains of Maia in 1335. Its elevated position and the closeness to the frontier of Biscay were key factors in its foundation.
